RESIDENT COUNSELOR APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR SUMMER 2018
Resident Counselor Applications have just opened for summer 2018! Resident Counselors are paid traveling summer camp counselors hired by the United Methodist Camping Ministries in Oregon and Idaho to serve three of the camps in this conference. From the serene mountain and lake views of Suttle Lake Camp to the rushing waterfall at Camp Latgawa out to the beautiful Oregon Coast at Camp Magruder, Resident Counselors (RCs) have the opportunity to lead campers as role models, spiritual guides, and friends. This work provides an environment that is as meaningful as it is fun in three beautiful locations.
The hiring process for the Resident Counselors is changing. This is the process for summer 2018: Applications can be returned as soon as they’re finished, and an interview date will be set individually shortly after applications are returned. RCs will be hired continuously throughout the year until the position is filled. Typically, eight RCs are hired per season.

You need to be 18 years of age by the start of summer 2018 to apply. Applicants attending this retreat will receive priority over those requiring other training arrangements.
WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING A RESIDENT COUNSELOR?
Resident Counselors spend each week leading a cabin of campers of Lower Elementary, Elementary, Middle School, or High School ages and counsel 7-8 weeks with one additional training week in June. In addition to these program camps, Resident Counselors will also have an opportunity to serve during one week of Camp Hope at Magruder, a camp for adults with developmental disabilities, and another week at Magruder for Camp Discovery, a camp for youth affected by epilepsy. Resident Counselors are paid $2,925 for nine weeks of service in the summer, including one week off mid-summer. Transportation between camps will be provided. The start date is approximately June 9, and the end date is as late as August 21.
RCs accompany campers through most of the camp schedule and are expected to participate in all activities with campers. Counselors serve as a role model, spiritual guide, disciplinarian, and advocate. This position requires the applicant to be a person who works wells as a leader to children and youth and who can provide a safe, fun, and meaningful experience to campers even amidst fatigue. The work serving as a Resident Counselor involves long hours and is very physically demanding. Applicants should understand this is a position that requires stamina and endurance, as well as a positive outlook.
